The programme develops in-depth knowledge and hands-on competence across key vehicle systems, including engine, chassis, transmission and electrical systems, with a strong focus on diagnostics, fault finding, repair techniques, and safe working practices in a workshop environment. Learners also build employability skills such as communication, teamwork and professional standards, often supported through work experience or employer engagement activities. Assessment typically combines practical tasks, online tests and portfolio evidence of competence.

 On completion, learners can progress into employment as a vehicle technician, or areas like electric/hybrid, ADAS or MOT testing.

  • Course Details

    This course enhances the learning of Level 2 and completes the VRQ section of study which is the technical element of assessment. It includes both practical and diagnostic assessment units required for progression into apprenticeships.

    Topics covered include:

    • Routine vehicle maintenance
    • Removal and replacement of vehicle units
    • Diagnosis and rectification of vehicle faults
    • Fitting and replacing vehicle tyres
  • Entry Guidelines

    • Level 3 courses are usually 2 years in length.
    • If you have a level 2 qualification in the subject you want to study and a maths or English GCSE at Grade 4 (or functional skill level 2) you can study at this level.
    • Entry requirements for Level 3 courses in some sectors may be more specific. If you're unsure whether you meet these requirements, don't worry — we can help you find a suitable course that aligns with your skills and experience.

  • Timetable

    You will typically be in college for a minimum of 3 days per week. You will receive your individual timetable at the start of your course.
  • Equipment Required

    To learn effectively on your course you will need to use certain items of equipment and undertake particular activities. We will provide these for your use whilst in College, but to enhance your learning experience further we require you to have Personal Protective Equipment and a small tool kit.
