ALS

Additional Learning Support (ALS) & SEND

Success in college should be accessible to everyone. At Wirral Met College, our mission is to help every student, including those with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), reach their full potential.

Our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team provides a highly tailored support system to help you succeed in your studies, build confidence, and enjoy your college experience.

Wirral Met’s support for students with high needs was rated outstanding by Ofsted, which means we’re one of the top colleges nationally!

Our Dedicated ALS Team

Our team is made up of over 70 trained professionals, including specialist tutors, learning support assistants, and communication support workers. They work across all campuses, subject areas, and levels to support students with a wide range of needs.

Getting the Right Support for You

To ensure your support is truly effective, we follow a simple and confidential process:

  • Confidential Assessment: You’ll be offered a confidential assessment with a specialist tutor.
  • Needs Identification: The tutor will work closely with you to identify your specific needs and determine what kind of support suits you best.
  • Tailored Plan: We will create a personalised support plan just for you.

Types of Support Provided

We offer a wide range of flexible and tailored support options to remove barriers to learning and empower you to achieve your goals:

In-Class Assistance: This includes one-to-one support directly in lessons or help around the college from a Learning Support Assistant or Communication Support Worker. Additional support is also available during lunch and break times to help you feel confident and included throughout the day.

Personalised Learning: Subject tutors may adapt lessons to meet the needs of your personal learning plan, with tailored support in the classroom to help you engage and succeed in your studies.

Exam Arrangements: We arrange specific and necessary support for assessments and exams, which can include extra time, rest breaks, or a reader/scribe.

Health and Wellbeing Support: We can offer assistance with medication management and personal care, ensuring your individual needs are met so you can focus on your learning.

Ongoing Review: We regularly review and adapt your additional support plan to ensure it consistently meets your changing needs throughout your time with us.

Our goal is to ensure you receive support you need to feel confident and empowered as a learner.
