Course Details
The Level 1 UAL Art, Design and Media programme is a vocational course for students aged 16 and above. It is designed to support learners in developing the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to progress into further education, training programmes, apprenticeships, or future study within the creative industries.
Throughout the course, students develop both practical and creative abilities that can support progression onto Level 2 courses or other higher levels of study, as well as potential career pathways in areas such as art, design and photography.
The programme encourages students to develop an understanding of visual communication and the stages of the creative process. Learners are supported in exploring ideas, experimenting with materials and techniques, and developing these ideas into completed outcomes. The course places a strong emphasis on experimental practical work, which is supported by contextual research, analysis and evaluation to help students understand the influences behind their work and reflect on their creative development.
Students will explore a range of specialist areas, including:
- Drawing
- Painting
- Textiles
- Digital Media
- Printmaking
During the programme, students use a variety of equipment, materials and creative processes while building practical skills and confidence in different art and design disciplines. They also gain experience in preparing and presenting their work professionally, including producing pieces for display as part of an exhibition.

- Basic levels of literacy and numeracy are expected.
