This course prepares you for employment in the operations engineering sector and will be suitable for students who have already decided that they wish to enter this area of work. Some adult students may wish to make the commitment required by this qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment in engineering or progress onto a university degree level programme. Other students may want to extend the specialism that they followed on the Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC programme.

Course details

The course can be delivered flexibly according to an individual's circumstance — classroom-based, distance learning or a combination of both. This will need to be discussed with the programme team at interview. Following from a successful completion of a HNC in Engineering, students must undertake a total of seven units to achieve a HND in Operations Engineering, consisting of six mandatory core units and one optional unit. A list of these can be found below: Core: Research Project Professional Engineering Management (Pearson-Set) Further Mathematics (Specialist) Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) (Specialist) Industrial Services (Specialist) Thermofluids (Specialist) Level 5 Optional Module Bank: Advanced Mechanical Principles; Virtual Engineering; Further Thermodynamics; Further Mathematics; Commercial Programming Software; Distributed Control Systems; Further PLCs; Further Electrical Machines and Drives; Industrial Power, Electronics and Storage; Industrial Systems; Embedded Systems; Analogue Electronic Systems; Manufacturing Systems Engineering; Lean Manufacturing; Advanced Manufacturing Technology; Sustainability; Further Electrical, Electronic and Digital Principles; Utilisation of Electrical Power; Further Control Systems Engineering; Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC); Industrial Services; Thermofluids *Optional Unit also available as a specialist unit. If applicable, the College can deliver optional units, flexibly, according to the needs or choice of your employer. Entry guidelines

Entry to the course is entirely at the discretion of the programme team. The entry profile to the course is likely to include the following: Students are expected to have completed a Level 4 HNC Engineering course, which are also delivered at the College. Applicants may be subject to an assessment at interview to determine suitability to the course. IT skills would be advantageous for the course, but are not a required part of the entry criteria. Independent study is an integral component and would require students to be self motivated and committed to the course. Assessment Method

Students must achieve a minimum of 240 credits (of which at least 125 must be at level 5) to be awarded an Edexcel BTEC Level 5 HND. For each unit, students will be assessed through class-based assignments that may include a coursework element, depending on the module. Additional Information

For timetabled sessions, students will be based at the College's Twelve Quays Campus. The College's term dates are available on its website. However, these may differ according to the programme's assessment calendar. Assessment calendars and timetables of study are typically available in respective course handbooks, accessible through the College Virtual Campus following enrolment. This course has a maximum class size of 12. In classroom-based sessions for core units (and some optional), you may be taught alongside students from different engineering disciplines.

Where can I progress to?

Progression from this qualification may well be into or within employment in the operations engineering sector where students may work towards Incorporated Engineer status. Alternatively students could progress to degree courses in related engineering areas such as operations engineering, maintenance engineering or plant and process engineering.
