This work-related course is taught through a mix of practical and theory using our newly equipped STEM Centre to help you learn about rapidly developing engineering technologies e.g. rapid prototyping, 3D Printing and Robotics. It will provide you with a solid foundation in key aspects of modern engineering and is one of the recommended pathways for those seeking a career in the creative and well paid field of engineering.

Course Details

The course is made up of:

Core units:

  • Health & Safety
  • Mechanical Principles and Applications
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Optional units (chosen from the list below to meet the needs of the majority of students:

  • Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
  • Principles and Applications of Thermodynamics
  • Selection and Using Programmable Controllers
  • Principles and Applications of Electronic Devices and Circuits
  • Principles and Applications of Analogue Electronics
  • Construction and Applications of Digital Systems
  • Electronic Fault-finding
  • Industrial Robot Technologies
  • Entry Guidelines

    Five GCSE grades A to C to include, mathematics and English (grade 4 or above).

    Equivalent qualifications such as BTEC Level 2 will be considered.

    Assessment Method

    You will be assessed mainly by assignments.

    Additional Information

    Your skills in Mathematics, English and ICT will be developed throughout the course.
    Are you aged 16-18?
    Study programmes are full-time courses for 16-18 year olds which include:

    • A qualification such as BTEC Extended Diploma
    • Meaningful work experience or preparation for work
    • English and maths, if you don't already have GCSE grade A* - C in English and maths
    • Non-study activities such as tutorials, voluntary work, fund-raising/charity work, sport or trips

    Where can I progress to?
    • HNC Engineering
    • Entry into technical or other employment
    • Progression to an advanced apprenticeship or higher level apprenticeship in Engineering
    • Entry to university study for a degree in Engineering
