Welcome to the Aspiring Professionals — Carpentry & Joinery programme at Wirral Met. This course is designed to equip you with the core skills and knowledge needed to begin a rewarding career in woodwork and site carpentry. As well as learning hands-on techniques in measuring, cutting, and assembling materials, you'll build your confidence, teamwork, and communication skills to help you thrive in the workplace. You'll focus on carpentry-specific training while preparing for progression onto a Level 2 qualification in Carpentry and Joinery.
You'll develop your carpentry skills alongside improving your Maths, English, and digital abilities — all essential for your future career. Guided by experienced tutors, you'll receive tailored support, constructive feedback, and industry insights. Through tutorials, guest speakers, and hands-on work experience, you'll build your confidence, strengthen your communication, and prepare for interviews and employment in the Carpentry and Joinery trade.
You will study:
- Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
- Knowledge of construction technology
- Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
- Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
- Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
- Produce woodworking joint
3 days per week incorpating maths, Engliah, work experience and tutorial.
This is a Study Programme for students aged 16-18 years.
If you are yet to gain any formal qualifications (e.g. GCSE's) you will be enrolled onto our Aspiring Professionals Programme which is perfect for progression to further study at level 2 or alternatively an apprenticeship route into employment.
Basic levels of literacy and numeracy are required for you to study at this level (grade 2 or below in English/Maths)

For this course, you will be required to have
- Work boots
- Personal Protective equipment (PPE)
- A pen and paper
This is a study programme for those aged between 16-18. If you have not achieved a grade 4/C or higher in English and Maths, you will work alongside your course to complete this. An informal discussion for all candidates will be arranged with a member of the teaching team where you will have an opportunity to discuss the course and your individual needs.
