The BTEC HNC qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the area of photography. Successful completion of the HNC in Photography will also grant the opportunity to move onto the HND in Photography (also delivered at the College), allowing further development of skills in Photography.

Course details

You will learn about the many applications of photography with units including photographic techniques, fashion, portraiture and location based projects. Students will be introduced to both digital and traditional methods of photography. Units covered: Year 1

  • Visual communication in art and design
  • Contextual and cultural referencing in art and design
  • Photographic techniques
  • Fashion photography

Year 2

  • Ideas generation and development in art and design
  • Professional practice in art and design
  • Location photography
  • Darkroom practice in photography

Timetables of study and assessment calendars will be available in course handbooks, provided following enrolment. HND Photography students typically partake in classroom-based work two days a week. Class groups are expected to contain around 10-12 students, mixed of those studying both the HNC and HND in Photography.

Entry guidelines

Entry is open to students with relevant qualifications. Students who do not satisfy the entry criteria may be eligible by virtue of their motivation and relevant experience.

Learners who enter with at least one of the following are likely to benefit more readily from an art and design programme: a BTEC National in an art and design subject, a relevant GCE profile with appropriate supporting passes at GCSE (C/4 and above), appropriate work experience. Applicants are required to present a portfolio of their work and will be interviewed before being accepted onto the course.

Assessment Method

Assessment will be through a carefully selected mix of assignments and portfolio reviews. A selection of units on the course will be assessed through a student presentations.
