Wirral Met College Partners with APCL Cammell Laird to Launch Aspiring Shipbuilders Programme, Applications Open for September Intake.

Wirral Met College is proud to announce a new partnership with APCL Cammell Laird, a renowned British shipbuilder and Ship Repairer, to launch the Aspiring Shipbuilders Programme. This hands-on course offers an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in engineering to step into a career that combines tradition, innovation and significant opportunities within the maritime industry. Applications are now open for the September intake.

The Aspiring Shipbuilders Programme, delivered in collaboration with APCL Cammell Laird, introduces students to the world of shipbuilding and ship repair. Participants will explore how ships are designed, built, and maintained, while simultaneously developing essential technical and professional skills highly sought after by employers. The curriculum covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering, including welding and metal fabrication, electrical and electronic systems, mechanical systems including Computer Aided Design (CAD) software skills. The Programme also incorporates vital English, Maths and digital skills necessary for career progression or further study.

A key component of the Programme is the real-world experience offered through 35 hours of work experience, employer-set projects based on real industry tasks, talks from industry experts, and external visits to explore engineering in action. Students will also receive support in building a strong CV and preparing for job interviews.

Upon successful completion of the Aspiring Shipbuilders Programme, students will have developed the knowledge and skills to become potential ideal candidates for the APCL Cammell Laird Apprenticeship Programme. APCL Cammell Laird, one of the largest employers in the area, has a multi-award-winning apprenticeship Programme, making it a leader in the UK maritime industry. Successful apprenticeship candidates will receive their training at The Engineering College, a specialist center for engineering training, founded by and located next to the APCL Cammell Laird shipyard.

This collaboration is especially significant given Wirral’s proud maritime and industrial history. From shipbuilding to global trade, the River Mersey has shaped the region’s identity and economy for generations. By reviving these traditions through modern training and education, Wirral Met and APCL Cammell Laird are working together to secure a strong future for local talent.
Gill Banks, Principal and CEO of Wirral Met College, stated, "We are incredibly excited to partner with Cammell Laird on the Aspiring Shipbuilders Programme. This collaboration provides our students with an unparalleled opportunity to gain practical skills and real-world experience in a thriving industry. It directly aligns with our commitment to providing education that leads to meaningful careers and supports the local economy."

Mike Hill, Managing Director of APCL Cammell Laird, said: "APCL Cammell Laird is proud to be working with Wirral Met College again to launch our new Aspiring Shipbuilders Programme.
"This new Programme will enable students to develop the knowledge and skills of our industry to help them to become potential ideal candidates for the APCL Cammell Laird Apprenticeship Programme. The course is perfect for young people who have a real keen interest in this industry and in addition for those who may have previously applied for an APCL Cammell Laird apprenticeship.

"APCL Cammell Laird is committed to investing in the next generation of skilled engineers and shipbuilders and this new course is another step forward to helping more young people with their career paths.
"By providing hands-on training we’re helping young people from all backgrounds develop the expertise and confidence needed to succeed in the maritime sector."

This Programme is designed to develop a range of valuable skills, including problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork, communication, project management, time management, creative thinking, adaptability, and confidence in working with engineering tools and technology. These skills open doors to apprenticeships, further study, or direct entry into engineering careers.
