If you are a young adult or school leaver with learning difficulties and you would like to improve your independence and social skills then this course will help you.

Course details

You will develop the skills to make decisions to cope with your daily life as an adult. You will work towards individual goals for literacy and numeracy as well as increasing the social skills that you will use in everyday situations. You will be encouraged to identify your strengths as well as the skills to be developed. You will have regular group and individual tutorials to help you do this. Literacy and Numeracy are developed through practical activities. Numeracy will include counting, the use of money, telling the time, weighing and measuring. Literacy will include speaking and listening as well as reading social sight signs. Some learning will take place out in the community and visits to places of interest are an important part of the course. You will learn in a small group and will have support at all times. You may work towards E1 Personal Porgression Excel and/or college certificates for individual goals. College certificates for Numeracy and communications and an English Speaking Board qualification if appropriate. Ascentis unitised qualifications are completed by some students.

Entry guidelines

You should be working between Entry level 1, Entry Level 2 of the Adult Core Curriculum and have the skills to follow single step instructions in order to remain safe. You must also demonstrate the appropriate adult behaviour in line with attending a Further Education College. You should have the potential to develop communication and life skills to support daily living and increase your level of independence. You need to have the commitment to take part in all learning activities. Working as part of a small group is of high importance for this course. This course is also geared towards woking in skills for emplyment.

Assessment Method

Leaners will be assesed via a paper based assesment of maths and english. Some learners will complete an online assessment.

Additional Information

Application for this course can be made direct to the course tutor or through a Specialist Careers Adviser or Social Worker / Carer. Your tutor will work with you to identify your particular learning and support needs to assist you in studying on this course.
Are you aged 16-18?
Study programmes are full-time courses for 16-18 year olds which include:

  • A qualification such as BTEC Extended Diploma
  • Meaningful work experience or preparation for work
  • English and maths, if you don't already have GCSE grade A* - C in English and maths
  • Non-study activities such as tutorials, voluntary work, fund-raising/charity work, sport or trips

Students may progress to Prep 4 Work college vocational college courses or Adult Services.

    If you are aged 16-18:

    This study programme will be FREE for most students who are aged 16-18 on 31 August, or students aged 19-24 with an Education, Health & Care Plan.

    If you are aged 19 or over:

    Depending on your personal circumstances, this course could be FREE for you. Please see our Fees and Discounts leaflet for details, or call 0151 551 7777.
