The course is designed to increase knowledge and skills in the subject of chemistry. Following full completion of HNC in Applied Chemistry, students will have to undertake an additional core unit and seven optional modules. (Please note that The number of additional units needed to convert an HNC to an HND depends on whether the HNC was the current 8 unit or previous specification, 10 unit qualification.) Core Units: Inorganic Chemistry Organic Chemistry Physical Chemistry Chemical Laboratory Techniques Project for Applied Science Analysis of Scientific Data and Information Optional Unit: Laboratory Management; Work-based Investigation (this is mandatory for apprentices); Inorganic Chemistry of Crystal Structures and Transition Metal Complexes; Organic Chemistry of Aromatic and Carbonyl Compounds; Physical Chemistry of Spectroscopy, Surfaces and Chemical and Phase Equilibria; Analytical Chemistry; Environmental Chemical Analysis; Industrial Chemistry; Biochemistry of Macromolecules and Metabolic Pathways; Polymer Chemistry; Medicinal Chemistry; Atomic and Nuclear Physics for Spectroscopic Applications; Environmental Monitoring and Analysis; Environmental Management and Conservation; Quality Assurance and Quality Control; Management of Projects; Managing the Work of Individuals and Teams; Nuclear Chemistry; Nanotechnology; Materials Science and Technology; Statistics for Experimental Design; Work-based Experience (mandatory for apprentices); Personal and Professional Development (mandatory for apprentices); Employability Skills (mandatory for apprentices); Note that those who did HNC on the previous specification may need to upgrade a few of their existing units where unit specifications have changed significantly.
It is possible to import units from the applied biology course.

Pearson BTEC Higher National qualifications are designated Higher Education qualifications in the UK. They are aligned to the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Subject Sector Benchmarks. These qualifications are part of the UK Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).
This qualification enhances job opportunities in laboratory work and a range of related careers. It can also lead to higher education studies such as BSc (Hons), which can be delivered at the College in partnership with UCLan.
