This Apprenticeship covers all the basics of Retail. As a Retail apprentice, you'll work as a Sales Assistant, Customer Service Assistant or Stockroom Assistant. Duties are likely to include helping customers to choose products, dealing with customer queries and processing payments in a range of retail environments, helping to provide a positive and 'seamless' service, or handling stock and deliveries, receiving, storing, and picking stock for the sales floor. You'll study topics such the principles of retail, displaying stock and processing payments. On this Apprenticeship you'll spend a lot of time in a customer facing environment. You will need vast reserves of patience, tact, energy and the ability to communicate with a wide range of customers.

Course details

The Apprentice framework includes the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Retail Skills (QCF)
  • Level 2 Certificate in Retail Knowledge
  • Functional Skills English Level 1
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 1

The mandatory unit on the Level 2 Certificate in Retail Skills is:

  • Work effectively in a retail team
Entry guidelines

Apprentices must be in paid employment of at least 30 hours per week. Apprenticeships where the Apprentice is working and studying for less than 30 hours per week are by exception only. In any circumstances the Apprentice must not work for less than 16 hours per week. It is advantageous to have 3 GCSE's at grade D or above in English, maths, Science or Art.

Employers are looking for applicants who have a keen interest in providing high levels of customer service and can be flexible with their skills. Apprenticeships are designed for individuals who are in paid employment within the sector and would like to achieve qualifications which recognise the skills they gain in the workplace. If you have already found a job you may be able to convert it into an Apprenticeship. Speak to your employer and discuss the opportunity of you becoming an Apprentice.
