The course is delivered over approximately 30 taught sessions of three hours each designed to teach toward the AQA GCSE Physics specification. Students will be required to commit to at least 3 additional hours per week of independent study to be successful on this course.

Course details

Students will be taught energy, electricity, particle model of matter, atomic structure, forces, waves, magnetism and electromagnetism, and astrophysics over the 30 week period. Students will also be taught the required practicals (for which they will be required to demonstrate detailed knowledge in the external examination), as well as data interpretation including how to draw conclusions from given tables or graphs, and how to draw bar charts and scatter graphs. The course is assessed through examinations (2 papers of 1 ¾ hours each) at the end of the academic year.

Entry guidelines

Relevant Level 1 qualification or minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade 3/D or above. Satisfactory interview, assessment, school report and/or satisfactory reference. If English is not your first language, you may need an assessment before enrolling on this course. To discuss further, please contact the ESOL department on 0151 551 7144.

Equipment Required

No specialist equipment required. The college provides all safety equipment and practical resources. You will be required to bring paper, pens, scientific calculator and you may also be required to purchase the recommended text book at the start of the course.

Assessment Method

Please note that a GCSE in mathematics of grade C/4 is not a prerequisite of this course, but is highly recommended due to the nature of the mathematical intensity of the subject. You will be informed of the examination dates at the start of the course and must ensure you are able to attend these (they will be in the day time).

Where can I progress to?

From this course (providing you have 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and maths) you can progress onto courses such as nursing and teaching or an Access to HE course. A GCSE in Physics would enable you to progress onto almost any university degree (provided the you already has the necessary level 3 qualifications to do so).
