This is part one of the L1 BSL qualification with the opportunity to complete the course with a College Certificate in December or continue and complete the full L1 qualification in June.
- Different forms of signing including Makaton and regional variations
- Signing Structure (understanding placement, use of verbs & phrases, non-manual features, sign order, handshapes, direction, orientation)
- The range of people who use BSL and how they acquire BSL, i.e through Deaf families or membership of deaf communities including schools
- The range of people who use other methods of communication in preference to BSL
- Know how a deaf person's language and cultural background affects communication
- Understand why deaf people who use BSL may identify themselves as a minority group
- Awareness of the issues around the deaf community
- Meeting people (identifying common courtesies and information, understanding simple question forms, and the fingerspelling names & places)
- Using numbers (use of local numbering systems for counting people, things, telling the time, age and currency variants)
Relevant Entry Level qualification or 3GCSEs at Grade 2/E or above.
Satisfactory interview, assessment, school report and/or satisfactory reference.

Deaf Awareness Test
You can progress immediately to the L1 BSL Part 2 Award, starting in January and lasting until June. Following this we offer BSL at Levels 2, 3, 4 and 6.
