A modular Level 5 course in Applied Chemistry, with a minimum of 240 credits, this course is suitable for employees from science based industries and for those who wish to improve their science qualifications but are unable to study full time.

This Applied Chemistry course is taught at our multi-million pound Twelve Quays campus in Birkenhead.

Course Details

Students must undertake a total of fifteen units over 3 years to achieve a HND in Applied Sciences (Chemistry), consisting of eleven mandatory core units and four optional units. A list of these can be found below:

Mandatory Units:

Level 4

  • Fundamentals of Laboratory Techniques
  • Scientific Data Handling Approaches and Techniques
  • Regulation and Quality in the Applied Sciences
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Physical Chemistry

Optional Units (Level 4)

  • Fundamentals of Biochemistry
  • Work-based investigation

Level 5

  • Analysis of Scientific Data and Information
  • Applied Sciences Research Project
  • Further Analytical Chemistry
  • Aromatic and Carbonyl Compounds
  • Solid State and Transition Metal Chemistry

Optional Units (Level 5)

  • Spectroscopy, Surface Chemistry and Equilibria
  • Drug Development for Production
  • Science Laboratory Management

Entry Guidelines

You need 2 A Levels (or equivalent) to study this course, one of which must be chemistry.

BTEC Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma in Applied Science, BTEC National Certificate/National Diploma in Applied Science or Access to Higher Education (Science-based) are appropriate equivalents.

Level 2 English and Level 2 maths are essential.

Assessment Method

For each unit, students are assessed through coursework and practical assignments. This course is assessed by assignments which contribute to a pass, merit or distinction grade for each unit. This qualification will have an overall grade of pass, merit or distinction.

For timetabled sessions, students will be based at the College's Twelve Quays Campus.

Pearson BTEC Higher National qualifications are designated Higher Education qualifications in the UK. They are aligned to the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Subject Sector Benchmarks. These qualifications are part of the UK Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).

Where can I progress to?

By studying for an additional year, students can convert their Level 4 HNC Diploma into a Level 5 HND Diploma by taking a further 8 units - two of which can be built into the HNC programme.

This qualification enhaces job opportunites in laboratory work and a range of related careers. Progression to HND leads to a qualification worth 240 credits. Students employed in chemical industry may progress to a Level 5 Higher Level Apprenticeship in Chemical Science.

This award is accepted by the Royal Society of Chemistry as satisfying part of their requirement for eventual professional recognition.
