This course, written and awarded by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) covers topics typically included in the first 2 years of a modern chemistry BSc: inorganic, organic, physical, analytical and green chemistry. The part-time course lasts 3 years. It is suitable both for day release students who are employed in local industry and those for whom part-time study is the better option.
This Chemistry foundation degree is taught at our multi-million pound Twelve Quays campus in Birkenhead.
As a part time student, you will complete 12 modules, over 3 years. You will study six level 4 modules and six level 5 modules over 3 years.
Level 4:
- Basic Skills for Chemists (practical chemistry and mathematics)
- Introduction to Inorganic Chemistry
- Introduction to Organic Chemistry
- Introduction to Physical Chemistry
- Introduction to Analytical Chemistry
- Sustainability and the Chemical Industry
Level 5:
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Physical Chemistry: Applications in Analytical Science
- Advanced Analytical Chemistry
- Laboratory Chemistry
- Project Module
Students should have 4 good GCSEs (A* - C/9 - 4) including double science, English and maths plus 2 A levels (D or above), one of which must be in chemistry.
Equivalent qualifications such as the BTEC Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma and Access to HE courses will be considered as alternatives, providing there is significant chemistry content.
The majority of the level 4 modules are assessed by assignments and in-class tests.
A portfolio of laboratory work must also be maintained.
The majority of the level 5 modules have fewer assignments than the level 4 modules and will have a formal examination. A project report is a requirement of the project module.
Good links are maintained with the University so that students will feel comfortable with progressing to UCLan, if they choose to.
Students will have access to the UCLan library which includes e-books and e-journals.
Typically, a single module will require about 8 hours per week. This normally consists of between two to four hours contact time with staff in lectures, practical sessions or tutorials and the rest in private study, reading around the subject or preparing assignments.
