This course is the flagship NEBOSH qualification and is the first UK vocational qualification to be developed specifically for aspiring health and safety professionals, building directly upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH National General Certificate and providing a sound basis for progression to postgraduate study.
Unit DNI (Application of health and safety management in the workplace) comprises a written assignment of approximately 10,000 words. The focus of this unit should be the application of the knowledge and understanding developed in Units A, B and C to a real workplace situation. The aim of the assignment is for students to carry out a review of the arrangements for managing health and safety in a workplace and to produce justified, proportionate recommendations to improve health and safety performance. The assignment should include:
- An introduction that sets the scene
- Aims and objectives
- A description of the methodology used to carry out the assignment
- A description of the workplace
- A description of role of the health and safety practitioner
- A critical analysis of how health and safety is currently managed by the organisation based on reviews of leadership, management, worker involvement, competence, legal compliance and risk profile
- An evaluation of where improvements should be made
- Conclusions which summarise the main issues identified
- Justified, proportionate, recommendations based on the findings
- An executive summary
The Diploma syllabus assumes that the candidate will have the broad basic knowledge of health and safety that is provided by a level 3 qualification such as the NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent. The standard of English required by the candidates studying for this award must be such that they can both understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. If English is not your first language you should be qualified to IELTS 7.0 or higher.
The unit D assignment is marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.
The NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety qualification requires the completion of four core units: A, B, C and DNI. See separate leaflets for details. A unit certificate is issued denoting successful achievement of each unit. A Diploma award parchment is issued on completion of all four units.
The qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is the first step to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). It is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for full membership (MIIRSM).
The National Diploma provides a sound basis for progression to MSc level: A number of UK universities offer MSc programs that accept the National Diploma as a full or partial entry requirement.
