This course is the flagship NEBOSH qualification and is the first UK vocational qualification to be developed specifically for health and safety professionals. The NEBOSH National Diploma is the qualification for aspiring health and safety professionals, building directly upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH National General Certificate. It is designed to provide you with the expertise required to undertake a career as a safety and health practitioner and also provides a sound basis for progression to postgraduate study.
Unit A covers the following: Element 1: Principles of health and safety management; Element 2: Principles of health and safety law; Element 3: Criminal law; Element 4: Civil law; Element 5: Loss causation and incident investigation; Element 6: Measuring and reviewing health and safety performance; Element 7: Assessment and evaluation of risk; Element 8: Risk control; Element 9: Organisational factors; Element 10: Human factors; Element 11: The role of the health and safety practitioner
The Diploma syllabus assumes that the candidate will have the broad basic knowledge of health and safety that is provided by a level 3 qualification such as the NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent. The standard of English required by the candidates studying for this award must be such that they can both understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. If English is not your first language you should be qualified to IELTS 7.0 or higher.
Units A, B and C are each assessed by a three hour written examination, marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH. Unit DNI is a 10,000 word report on health and safety management in the workplace which is submitted to, and assessed by, NEBOSH.
The NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety qualification requires the completion of four core units: A, B, C and DNI. See separate leaflets for details. A certificate is issued on successful achievement of each unit. The Diploma award is issued on successful completion of all four units.
The Diploma qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Grad IOSH). This is the first step to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). It is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for full membership (MIIRSM). The National Diploma provides a sound basis for progression to degree level qualifications. Several UK universities offer MSc programs that accept the National Diploma as a full or partial entry requirement.
