The NEBOSH National General Certificate is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK with over 100,000 people having gained the qualification. It is suitable for managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations making day-to-day decisions at work that need a broad understanding of health and safety issues and be able to manage risks effectively.
This course comprises 5 elements:
1 Foundations in health and safety
2 Health and safety management systems - Plan
3 Health and safety management systems - Do
4 Health and safety management systems - Check
5 Health and safety management systems - Act
There are no specific barriers, in terms of academic qualifications, skills or experience to this course. Ideally you should have at least two years work experience in any area of work and have a level 2 English qualification or equivalent. The standard of English required by the candidates studying for this award must be such that they can both understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. If English is not your first language you should be qualified to IELTS 6.0 or higher.

Assessed by a two hour written examination marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.
This unit must be combined with NEBOSH units GC2 and GC3 to gain the full NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety; units NCC1 and NCC2 for the full NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Safety and Health; or units FC1 and FC2 for the full NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management. See separate leaflets for details. A unit certificate is issued denoting successful achievement of each unit. A Certificate award parchment is issued on completion of all three units.
The qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Technician Membership (Tech IOSH) of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is the first step to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). It also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for Associate membership (AIIRSM). Candidates wishing to further develop their health and safety expertise may consider studying the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
