The NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management is established as a leading qualification in fire safety. It is suitable for managers, supervisors, employee representatives and staff from all types of organisations to provide an appropriate breadth of underpinning knowledge for non-specialists in fire safety to enable them to discharge more effectively their organisational duties or functions with respect to workplace fire safety.

Course Details

It also aims to equip holders to contribute to the conduct and review of fire risk assessments and preventative and protective measures within most low risk workplaces, in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The FC1 unit comprises 6 elements; Element 1: Managing fire safety Element 2: Principles of fire and explosion Element 3: Causes and prevention of fires Element 4: Fire protection in buildings Element 5: Safety of people in the event of a fire Element 6: Fire safety risk assessment The FC2 unit comprises a fire risk assessment within a workplace, followed by a report to management regarding the assessment with recommendations.

Entry Guidelines

There are no specific barriers, in terms of academic qualifications, skills or experience to this course. Ideally you should have at least two years work experience in any area of work and have a level 2 English qualification or equivalent. The standard of English required by the candidates studying for this award must be such that they can both understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. If English is not your first language you should be qualified to IELTS 6.0 or higher.

Assessment Method

FC1 is assessed by a two hour written examination marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH. FC2 is assessed by a four hour practical examination carried out in the candidate's own workplace, marked by the tutor/assessors and moderated by NEBOSH

Additional Information

These two units must be combined with NEBOSH unit NGC1 to gain the full NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management. See separate leaflets for details. A unit certificate is issued denoting successful achievement of each unit. A Certificate award parchment is issued on completion of all three units.

Where can I progress to?

The qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Technician Membership (Tech IOSH) of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is the first step to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). It also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for Associate membership (AIIRSM). Candidates wishing to further develop their health and safety expertise may consider studying the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
