This is a part-time day course for those working in a salon. You will study basic women's hairdressing.
The course will include the following underpinning knowledge and skills:
Related skills and the required knowledge will also be studied including:
- Reception studies
- Client care
- Team work
- Creating a positive impression
During the course you may be provided the opportunity to attend national shows and exhibitions where you can see demonstrations by some of the country's leading hairdressers. Once a year we hold a College show and you will be expected to participate.
Level 1 qualification in a relevant subject area or a minimum of 3 GCSEs at grade 3/D or above.
You need to be working full-time in a salon and have a genuine interest in Hairdressing as a long term career.
You need the skills for fine work such as applying colours, perming and cutting hair.
An ability to communicate one to one e.g. to a tutor or client and in a group as part of a discussion.

You will need to provide your own equipment and overalls following the College uniform code, the approximate cost is £180.
Assessments are continuous throughout the course. Practical assessment tests are carried out and written assignments are completed. In addition there are VTCT End Tests.
Reading & writing - You need to produce written work and achieve end of unit exams. Technical language will be taught on the course.
Basic numeracy skills are required as you will need to be able to work with treatment materials and handle money.
This profession and course require you to be able to carry out physical work for long periods of time. Reasonable adjustments will be made to accommodate disabilities.
You may gain positions working as a stylist in hairdressing salons in the UK area and abroad, on cruise liners, in theatre, films and television. Once you have completed your Level 2 you have the opportunity to apply for Level 3 and advance your skills and knowledge.

This course is FREE if you are aged 19+, unemployed/in receipt of eligible benefits or in work earning less than £17,550 annual gross salary, and you do not have a level 3 qualification.
The fee quoted is for the academic year 2019-20.
