The primary outcome of the VTCT Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing is to prepare you to progress to the next level of vocational learning. All the units within this qualification directly relate to the hairdressing industry. The units in this qualification include: introducing you to the hair and beauty industries, how to present a professional image and working with others in the salon, salon reception, develop your creative skills in the art of dressing hair, applying temporary colour, create a hair and beauty image, provide effective shampooing and conditioning hair, how to display retail stock and the creative art of styling women's hair. Throughout this qualification you will develop your skills of shampooing, blow-drying and styling women's hair. You will also develop your knowledge of different hair types and health and safety requirements and how to present yourself within the hairdressing industry. You will learn how to section hair effectively and how to apply temporary colour. These skills and knowledge will together prepare you for the next level of vocational study. You will cover the following:
- Shampooing & conditioning
- Introduction to styling hair
- Health and Safety
You will also spend time in the Salon Reception area taking responsibility for the clients entering and leaving the salon. Work experience with our college technicians
During your course there will be opportunities for attending National shows and exhibitions.
- This is a study programme for students that are 16-18 years.
- A Relevant Entry Level qualification or 3 GCSEs at Grade 2/E or above.
- You need to have a genuine interest in Hairdressing.
- An ability to communicate one to one e.g. to a tutor or client and to follow verbal instructions from a tutor or client.
- You need the skills for working with customers e.g. helping to put on a gown and directing the client to the appropriate salon and workstation.
- You must be prepared to give and receive treatments to/from other students on your course.
- Satisfactory interview, assessment and reference or school report.

To learn effectively on your course you will need to use certain items of
equipment to undertake particular activities as part of your studies. These will
be yours to keep and you will be able to use them for practice at home and in
your future career.

Practical assessment tests are carried out and written work will be completed. In addition to this there are VTCT online exams that you must sit.
An interview for all candidates will be arranged with a member of the teaching team where you will have an opportunity to discuss the course and your individual needs. You will also undertake a skills test to allow us to assess your dexterity.
