This is a level 2 qualification designed to provide a standardised approach for the delivery and assessment of the knowledge and skills requirements. It also provides the knowledge requirements for its related VCQ and forms the knowledge component of the IMI SSC Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship framework (for Light Vehicle).
This VRQ offers an ideal step to the Vocational Competence Qualification (VCQ) for those who are employed, and wish to continue with their studies, as the knowledge at Level 2 meets that of the related VCQ.
This qualification also forms the knowledge component (technical certificate) of the IMI SSC Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship framework (for the Light Vehicle). It counts towards a Level 2 Apprenticeship.
Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 1 or an equivalent Level 1 vehicle qualification or minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade 3/D or above and suitable practical experience.
Satisfactory interview, assessment, school report and/or satisfactory reference.

Appropriate safety equipment is required including protective overalls and steel toe capped boots.
Students are assessed through practical assessments, on line theory questions and exams.
The assessment of this VRQ is made up of 2 components:
You must attend regularly and punctually.
Information Technology - Basic computer skills would be an advantage but not essential.

Study programmes are full-time courses for 16-18 year olds which include:
- A qualification such as BTEC Extended Diploma
- Meaningful work experience or preparation for work
- English and maths, if you don't already have GCSE grade A* - C or Grade 4 or above in English and maths
- Non-study activities such as tutorials, voluntary work, fund-raising/charity work, sport or trips
Progression onto Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 3, apprenticeship or employment.
