Access to Higher Education - Midwifery (Evening and Online) - J145

This course is a primarily for those students who wish to pursue a career in midwifery. It also provides preparation for entry to a degree or higher diploma course in health care including Nursing and other related health care professions.

Course Details

Four modules are studied, these are:

  • Human Biology
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Health Studies
    • In addition a research project will be undertaken chosen from one of the subject areas.

      Credits are awarded for the Access course modules. To achieve the Access Diploma, you must gain all 60 credits, including a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3. There are 20 units worth 3 credits each; 6 units of Biology, 4 of Psychology, 3 of Health Studies, 3 Sociology and 4 development units. 15 units are graded, while 5 must be passed but are not graded.

      The Access to HE Diploma is awarded by Openawards.org.

Entry Guidelines

This course is for students aged 19plus.

Pre Access Health including GCSE Maths, English Language and Science at Grade 4/C or Pre Access Medical Health and Science Professions including GCSE Maths and English Language at Grade 4/C above or 5 GCSE's which must include Maths, English Language and Science at Grade 4/C or above.

Evidence of relevant work experience in Health or Social Care sector, preferably working with women and families.

Satisfactory interview

Assessment Method

Assessments are continuous and include examinations, reports, essays, tests, assignments and presentations.

Additional Information

Proof of existing qualifications is required before a place can be offered.

Applicants will be selected for interview based on written task and application form. Factors considered during the interview include academic potential, motivation, relevant experience, and organisational and communication skills.

You will need to demonstrate that you can study successfully at a level equivalent to A-Level and have good English and number skills. It is preferable that you have some IT skills, but you will be given an opportunity to acquire these. In addition to lesson time, you will be expected to complete about 16 hours of independent study per week.

You should be aware that to meet the entry requirements for specific courses at University, you may need particular qualifications in addition to the Access qualification.

For example, some courses require GCSE Maths, English and Science at grade B or above and relevant work experience. You are advised to check the entry requirements for your intended degree course as soon as possible.

When you attend your Access interview, you will be given the opportunity to discuss how any additional requirements could be met.

Where can I progress to?
Degree or higher diploma course in health related subjects, such as nursing, midwifery and other related health care professions. Obtaining the Access to HE Diploma in Midwifery does not guarantee entry into any HE course.
