In the run up to the General Election and to coincide with the short campaign (the period between the dissolution of parliament and polling day), parliamentary candidates representing five political parties in theBirkenhead constituency were invited to attend a hustings event at Wirral Met College to debate policies and answer questions from students. Candidates included Clark Vasey (Conservative), Frank Field (Labour), Allan Brame (Liberal Democrat), Kenny Peers (Green) and Wayne Harling (UKIP).
Principal Sue Higginson was asked to organise and chair the event by the Students’ Union. This followed workshops that the Principal had developed with Student Representatives and the Students’ Union, to explore the themes in the Association of Colleges’ Manifesto.
Students from different subject areas were invited to the Question Time-style event and topics discussed included affordable and accessible student transport, introducing systematic careers education and advice for students aged 11 to 18, ensuring that assessments in school and college are reflective of the workplace, the significance of English and maths qualifications which allow students to gain the skills employers require.
Wirral Met College is a member of the Association of Colleges (AoC), which helped support the hustings event. AoC is campaigning for a number of recommendations for the next Government, such as supporting student choice, sustaining economic recovery through education and training and creating a fair and effective education system, which all provided the basis for the student’s questions. AoC’s Manifesto outlines ten recommendations to ensure that further education and most importantly their students can thrive and succeed. For more details visit aoc.co.uk
