This course is designed to give students the skills and experience of working with small animals. The aim of this 22 week programme is to progress students onto a level 2 qualification or into work.

This Course runs from 15th January to 29th June (2 terms) and is offered as an opportunity for 16-18 year olds to get back into education

Course details

You will be working with the our collection of small animals which includes lizards, toads, insects, rabbits and hamsters to learn practical handling, grooming, health, small animal care and feeding. Team work, work and life skills will be taught throughout the course to prepare you to take the next step to progress onto a level 2 qualification or to enter the work place. You will also have the opportunity to develop skills in horticulture, both in the on-site greenhouses and various off site locations.

Entry guidelines
  • This is a programme of study for students aged 16- 18 years
  • 3 GCSEs at Grade 2/E or above or a relevant Entry Level qualification
  • At least Entry level 3 in maths and English
  • Satisfactory interview, assessment and school report or reference

Equipment Required

You will be required to wear a student sweatshirt which must be worn for animal handling sessions.

Assessment Method

All 10 units are assessed through the building up a portfolio of evidence that covers the relevant assessment criteria. The portfolio assessments may be made up of reports, posters, essays, worksheets and timed tasks To achieve the certificate you must complete all 10 mandatory units.

Where can I progress to?

On successfully completing this course you may be able to progress to BTEC level 2 in Animal Care, other qualifications, an apprenticeship or enter employment.

    If you are aged 16-18:

    This study programme will be FREE for most students who are aged 16-18 on 31 August, or students aged 19-24 with an Education, Health & Care Plan.

    If you are aged 19 or over:

    Depending on your personal circumstances, this course could be FREE for you. Please see our Fees and Discounts leaflet for details, or call 0151 551 7777.
