This course is the flagship NEBOSH qualification and is the first UK vocational qualification to be developed specifically for aspiring health and safety professionals, building directly upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH National General Certificate and providing a sound basis for progression to postgraduate study.

This course comprises 11 elements; Element 1: Principles of toxicology and epidemiology Element 2: Hazardous substances and other chemicals - assessment of risk Element 3: Hazardous substances and other chemicals - engineering controls and personal protective equipment Element 4: Monitoring and measuring Element 5: Biological agents Element 6: Physical agents 1 - noise and vibration Element 7: Physical agents 2 - radiation Element 8: Psychosocial agents Element 9: Musculoskeletal risks and controls Element 10: Work environment risks and controls Element 11: Managing occupational health

Entry guidelines

The Diploma syllabus assumes that the candidate will have the broad basic knowledge of health and safety that is provided by a level 3 qualification such as the NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent. The standard of English required by the candidates studying for this award must be such that they can both understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. If English is not your first language you should be qualified to IELTS 7.0 or higher.

Assessment Method

Assessed by a three hour written examination marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH

Additional Information

The NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety qualification requires the completion of four core units: A, B, C and D. See separate leaflets for details. A unit certificate is issued denoting successful achievement of each unit. A Diploma award parchment is issued on completion of all four units.

Where can I progress to?

The qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is the first step to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). It is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for full membership (MIIRSM). The National Diploma provides a sound basis for progression to MSc level: A number of UK universities offer MSc programs that accept the National Diploma as a full or partial entry requirement.
