This is a part-time day course for those working in a salon. You will study basic womens' hairdressing.

Course details

The course will include the following underpinning knowledge and skills:

  • Shampooing
  • Conditioning
  • Cutting
  • Setting
  • Blowdrying
  • Perming
  • Colouring

Related skills and the required knowledge will also be studied including:

  • Reception studies
  • Client care
  • Team work
  • Creating a positive impression

During the course you may be provided the opportunity to attend national shows and exhibitions where you can see demonstrations by some of the countries leading hairdressers. Once a year we hold a college show and you will be expected to participate.

Entry guidelines

Level 1 qualification in a relevant subject area or a minimum of 3 GCSEs at grade 3/D or above. You need to be working full-time in a salon and have a genuine interest in Hairdressing as a long term career. You need the skills for fine work such as applying colours, perming and cutting hair. You may be expected to work under pressure and to stand for periods of time. If English is not your first language, you may need an assessment before enrolling on this course. Equipment Required

You will need to provide your own equipment and overalls following the College uniform code, the approximate cost is £180.

Assessment Method

Assessments are continuous throughout the course. Practical assessment tests are carried out and written assignments are completed. In addition there are VTCT End Tests.

Additional Information

You are expected to purchase your own equipment and overalls following the college dress code. An ability to communicate one to one e.g. to a tutor or client and in a group as part of a discussion. Reading & writing - You need to produce written work and achieve end of unit exams. Technical language will be taught on the course. Basic numeracy skills are required as you will need to be able to work with treatment materials and handle money.

Where can I progress to?

You may gain positions working as a stylist in hairdressing salons in the UK area and abroad, on cruise liners, in theatre, films and television. Once you have completed your Level 2 you have the opportunity to apply for Level 3 and advance your skills and knowledge.
