As an Advanced Apprentice in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair you will carry out light vehicle maintenance and inspections including servicing, diagnosing, repairing and replacing faulty parts and maintaining records.

Course details

The Apprentice framework includes the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair Competence
  • Level 3 Diploma in Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair Principles
  • Level 2 Functional Skill English
  • Level 2 Functional Skill maths
  • Level 2 Functional Skill ICT

Mandatory Specialist Units

  • Knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of vehicle auxiliary electrical faults
  • Knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle engine faults
  • Competency in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle engine faults
  • Knowledge in diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle chassis faults
  • Competency in diagnosing and rectifying vehicle auxiliary electrical faults
  • Competency in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle chassis system faults
  • Knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle transmission and driveline faults
Entry guidelines

Apprentices must be in paid employment of at least 30 hours per week. Apprenticeships where the Apprentice is working and studying for less than 30 hours per week are by exception only. In any circumstances the Apprentice must not work for less than 16 hours per week. Entry to the Advanced Apprenticeship could be upon completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship, a Level 2 vocational qualification, GCSEs, A-Levels or extended work experience in the industry.

Additional Information

Most employers are especially interested in applicants who can demonstrate a positive ?can do? attitude and a willingness to work hard, good communication skills on which this Apprenticeship will build an understanding of the importance to the business of providing excellent customer service at all times. This apprenticeship will require good manual dexterity, will involve handling heavy equipment and spending long periods standing. For those working with electrical systems, a colour blindness test will be necessary. Apprenticeships are designed for individuals who are in paid employment within the sector and would like to achieve qualifications which recognise the skills they gain in the workplace. An Advanced Level Apprenticeship will take a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 24 months. If you have already found a job you may be able to convert it into an Apprenticeship. Speak to your employer and discuss the opportunity of you becoming an Apprentice. There is plenty of help and support for you and your employer and they may be eligible for a grant. Where can I progress to?
  • Higher Level (Level 4) Apprenticeship in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
  • After further training and development onto a Foundation degree for example, in Automotive Engineering or Automotive Technology
  • Onto Higher Education (HE) programmes such as MEng and BEng programmes in Automotive.
