This course will provide you with a basic introduction to painting and decorating to enhance your practical skills. The Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating is designed to prepare people to enter the industry in their chosen craft.

Course details

The course has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions, and the test(s) are based on the student showing what they can do as an individual through the completion of all the requirement of the qualification. To gain the diploma, students must pass a series of practical assessments covering preparation of surfaces, paint application, wallpapering and specialist decorative finishes. There are also seven multiple choice theory tests corresponding to each unit of the qualification as listed below. The course will enable you to study a wide range of skills, all of which will help you on your chosen career pathway, moving into employment or further training. You will get the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised vocational qualification linked to your chosen career. This programme will help you to improve your English, maths, and ICT, plus develop the personal and social skills which employers look for. You will be given support and guidance throughout your learning journey and your progress will be reviewed with you regularly. Students will complete the following units for both practical and job knowledge:

  • 201: Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • 101: Principles of building, construction, information and communication
  • 116: Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
  • 117: Preparing surfaces for decoration
  • 118: Applying paint systems by brush and roller
  • 119: Applying foundation and plain papers
  • 120: Producing specialist decorative finishes
Entry guidelines

Relevant Entry level qualification or 3 GCSE's at grade 2/E or above and successful completion of a skills test. Satisfactory interview, school report and / or reference.

Equipment Required

Students will be expected to supply their own steel toe-capped footwear, white bib & brace overalls, a note pad and pen. A workbook is provided for each student.

Assessment Method

Assessment will be completed by practical and online tests.

Additional Information

The course requires manual dexterity and physical stamina. You will need to lift and handle tools and materials. Are you aged 16-18?
Study programmes are full-time courses for 16-18 year olds which include:

  • A qualification such as BTEC Extended Diploma
  • Meaningful work experience or preparation for work
  • English and maths, if you don't already have GCSE grade A* - C in English and maths (or grade 4 or above)
  • Non-study activities such as tutorials, voluntary work, fund-raising/charity work, sport or trips

Where can I progress to?

Successful completion of this course may mean you can progress to Level 2 Diploma Painting & Decorating or NVQ level 2 Painting & Decorating (if you gain an apprenticeship).
