30 Guided Learning Hours approximately 10 weeks., part-time

This is a level 2 course.

Course outline

This qualification is intended for candidates who want to:

  • Learn basic counselling skills (listening and responding skills) in helping roles
  • Find out more about counselling (this qualification won't teach you to be a counsellor, but may help you decide whether or not you want to train as one)
  • Improve professional and personal relationships

This qualification does not lead directly to an employed role. However, it could enhance an existing voluntary or paid role or increase the general employability of those seeking to enter the job market.

Course details

This course aims to provide you with self awareness and developed listening skills which may enhance your current job roles. It may also be beneficial as a stepping stone to the next level in a career in Counselling. The course includes:

1. Work within the limitations of the helping role

2. Establish boundaries for helping work

3. Communicate empathic understanding

4. Focus on helpee's agenda

5. Understand the importance of self-awareness in helping work

6. Use listening and responding skills

7. Use review and feedback to develop initial counselling skills

Entry guidelines

Minimum of 3 GCSE at grade D or above.

This qualification is not suitable for those who are currently in a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological confusion. Please be

aware that the course involves experiential elements that will

involve some personal disclosure and associated personal developmental activities.

Attendance will be required at an information session prior to start of the course where expectations and readiness to study are assessed.

Additional Information

85% attendance is required but 100% is expected due to the experiential nature of the course.

Please be aware that if your long term goal is to work with vulnerable adults or any person under the age of 18, it will be necessary to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check at any required college work placement, or eventual place of work.

Assessment Method

Continuous skills and personal development assessment together with a Learning Review (a written record of your learning experiences and feelings on the course) and a Self Review showing your understanding of what you have learned on the course and how it relates to you. These are externally verified by the CPCAB.

Equipment Required

You will need to provide an A4 file, plastic wallets, paper & pen. A clipboard to use to take notes in the sessions may be useful.
