This is a level 3 course.

Course outline

The Carpentry and Joinery Level 3 Diploma is designed to further develop the skills and knowledge of people, enabling them to work to an advanced level in the industry in their chosen craft. It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions.

Level 3 Diploma units

Unit 201/601 - Health, safety and welfare in construction

Unit 201 - Carry out first fix flooring and roofing

Unit 209 - Carry out second fixing operations

Unit 301/701 - Principles of organizing, planning and pricing construction work

Unit 306 - Carry out first fix roofing and stairs

Unit 307 - Carry out second fixing double doors and mouldings

Unit 308 - Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery

Entry guidelines

Level 2 Diploma in a relevant curriculum area qualification or minimum 4 GCSEs at Grade A*- C (Grade 4 or above) and successful completion of a skills test.

Satisfactory interview, school report and / or references.

Additional Information

The course requires manual dexterity and physical stamina. You will need to lift and handle tools and materials.

You will also be required to set up and use associated machinery.


Are you aged 16-18?
Study programmes are full-time courses for 16-18 year olds which include:
  • A qualification such as BTEC Extended Diploma
  • Meaningful work experience or preparation for work
  • English and maths, if you don't already have GCSE grade A* - C (Grade 4 or above) in English and maths
  • Non-study activities such as tutorials, voluntary work, fund-raising/charity work, sport or trips

Where can I progress to?

NVQ level 2/3 in Wood Occupations (if you gain employment). BTEC National/Higher National Certificate Construction.

Equipment Required

Students will be expected to supply their own safety boots and drawing equipment.

Assessment Method

Assessment is completed by practical and online tests.

This study programme will be FREE for most students who are aged 16-18 on 31 August, or students aged 19-24 with a Learning Development Needs Assessment or an Education, Health & Care Plan.

If you are aged 19 or over:

Fee : £2630.00

Depending on your personal circumstances, this course could be FREE for you if you are aged 19-23. Please see our Fees and Discounts leaflet, or call 0151 551 7777.
If you are aged 19+, you may be able to apply for a 19+ Advanced Learner Loan (which is available for some courses at level 3-6).

The fee quoted is for the academic year 2016-17. Course fees for 2017-18 will be confirmed in due course.
