The Intermediate Level Apprenticeship for the Children and Young People's Workforce is designed to build the knowledge and skills needed when working under supervision with children and young people from birth to 19 years of age. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas working in children's settings including early years and social care.

Course details

The Apprentice framework includes the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce
  • Level 1 Functional Skill English
  • Level 1 Functional Skill maths
  • Level 1 Functional Skill ICT

The mandatory units on the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce are:

  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
  • Child and young person development
  • Contribute to the support of positive environments for children and young people
  • Contribute to children and young people's health and safety
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Understanding partnership working in services for children and young people
  • Contribute to the support of child and young person development
  • Support children and young people's positive behaviour
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
Entry guidelines

Apprentices must be in paid employment of at least 30 hours per week. Apprenticeships where the apprentice is working and studying for less than 30 hours per week are by exception only. In any circumstances the apprentice must not work for less than 16 hours per week. Apprentices must be working under supervision within an early learning/childcare setting, usually caring for young children, e.g. pre-school, nursery, crèche and show a passion and commitment to working with children. It is a requirement to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Formerly known as Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

Additional Information

Apprenticeships are designed for individuals who are in paid employment within the sector and would like to achieve qualifications which recognise the skills they gain in the workplace. An Intermediate Level Apprenticeship will take a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 24 months. If you have already found a job you may be able to convert it into an Apprenticeship. Speak to your employer and discuss the opportunity of you becoming an Apprentice. There is plenty of help and support for you and your employer and they may be eligible for a grant. Where can I progress to?

This pathway is intended to provide learners with a good starting point within the sector, working under supervision (e.g. pre-school assistant, nursery assistant). However it is expected that learners will progress, either onto the Advanced Apprenticeship pathway or onto the L3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce as a stand-alone qualification. This will ensure that, as practitioners, they meet the appropriate level of competency, as determined by registration and regulatory requirements. Progression to L3 or Advanced Apprenticeship will also enable them to move to higher levels of work or enable them to work unsupervised, eg. nursery supervisor, childminder, foster carer. This pathway also provides a good opportunity for learners to move across the wider children's workforce, should they wish to do so. This is possible due to the "commonality" of much of the learning contained within the combined qualification - there are a number of units that are shared across qualifications in related occupations (e.g. schools support services, care, health, playwork).
