During the current climate of rising costs, we understand that recruiting a newly or fully qualified sports teacher can be difficult to achieve. However, recruiting a Sports Coach Apprentice could save you £16,000 - £24,000 per year versus the costs of recruiting a Newly Qualified Teacher.
A Sports Coach level 4 apprentice can plan, schedule, deliver and monitor the impact of a wide range of sports activities across all levels of primary and secondary school education.
Wirral Met can provide you with prospective candidates. By taking a Sports (level 3) student on a work experience placement (for one day per week), you can gain immediate support with the planning and delivery of a wide range of sports activities to meet the needs of all your year groups, including supporting children with additional learning needs.
Mihail is a second-year student on the NCFE Sports Coaching, Development and Excellence Diploma at level 3 and has developed his skills and confidence whilst working in a variety of community hubs and educational settings such as The Hive. He is passionate about sport and developing physical and mental wellbeing within others, by improving their confidence and independence through physical activity. Mihail has accredited qualifications in multi-sport programmes and counselling, with a range of experiences delivering activities to wide-variety of individuals.
Jennifer is another second-year student on the NCFE Sports Coaching, Development and Excellence Diploma at level 3 and she is keen to progress onto an apprenticeship at the end of her study programme in July. She has volunteered with Groves Primary School and Brownies to support the planning and delivery of community outreach programs and is now ready to take the next step in sport. She would like to put her coaching skills into practice working with school students across all age groups, helping with the planning, scheduling and implementation of a wide range of lessons.
Other students on the NCFE Sports Coaching, Development and Excellence Diploma at level 3 are also placed at a number of schools and sporting organisations across the Wirral. In addition to a range of accredited qualifications, our students have over 3 years' work experience in a range of coaching and educational settings, developing the ability to adapt their coaching approach to multiple age ranges.
Students can start placements over the coming weeks and will then be ready to progress onto a Sports Coach Level 4 Apprenticeship starting September 2023.

Step 1: Take a Wirral Met Sports student on a work experience placement

- Once day per week placements can start as soon as you need them, between February and June 2023
- The students will be able to provide a copy of their DBS
- Students are currently studying towards the NCFE Sports Coaching, Development and Excellence Diploma at level 3 which includes an academic activity leadership qualification with practical skills and technical/tactical development, and coaching. The course covers modules including Principles of Anatomy & Physiology, Physiology of Fitness, Assessing Risk in Sport, Fitness Training & Programming, Football Coaching, Practical Team Sports and Nutritional requirements.

- The Sports Coach level 4 apprentice should be employed for 30 or more hours per week, including 6 hours/one day per week off for attending the day release course in College (during term-time)
- The duration of the apprenticeship programme is 18 months plus 3 months for the End Point Assessment so your apprentice will need a contract for a minimum of 21 months.
- You are legally required to pay the Apprentice Wage for the first year of the apprenticeship, but many employers pay National Minimum Wage* to assist with recruiting and retaining apprentices.
- Apprentice Wage: £5.28/hour or £9,609.60 (35 hours/week contract)
- National Minimum Wage for those aged 18-20: £7.49/hour or £13,631.80 (35 hours/week contract)
- National Minimum Wage for those aged 21-22: £10.18/hour or £18,527.60 (35 hours/week contract)
- National Minimum Wage for those aged 23+: £10.42/hour or £18,964.40
* National Minimum Wage from April 2023
- The cost of the apprenticeship training and development is
- £9,000 paid for by Wirral Council’s Apprenticeship levy
- £450 for Academy or Independent schools which aren’t part of a larger institution paying the Apprenticeship levy (which may be paid via instalments)
- There is a £1,000 Government incentive for taking on an 18-year-old apprentice
