You will study a wide popular music curriculum and have the opportunity to specialise in the fields of performance, music technology, recording and composition.

This qualification is validated by the University of the Arts, London, and is designed to meet the demands of the modern music industry. The qualification provides students with opportunities to explore their talent and test their creativity and ambition in a broad range of performing and production arts skills. This certificate will be awarded by UAL (which includes the prestigious colleges of Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, Chelsea College of Art and Design, Wimbledon College of Art and Camberwell College of Arts).

Delivered by tutors who are active music practitioners you will encounter a wide range of themes relating to modern music practice, musical theatre, song writing, improvisation and singing. Working and developing as a musical ensemble is a key part of the course and skills are developed in performance techniques. The course introduces a practical approach to operating audio recording equipment, software, sound recording techniques and an understanding of acoustics. You will also learn about musical styles and periods that influence modern musical practices. Performances will take place throughout the course at college and public venues. The qualification is equal to 3 'A' levels.

The course is based in a purpose built facility equipped with specialist state of the art digital technology. Facilities include a recording studio linked to a control room with mixing facilities. The course suits those with a strong interest in music.

This is a 2 year programme delivered as follows:

  • 1st year Diploma (P065)
  • 2nd Year Extended Diploma (P071)

Achievement of the 1st year (Diploma) will enable you to progress onto the 2nd year (Extended Diploma).

Course details

This course concentrates on the four main areas within the music industry:

  • Musicianship
  • Working in The Music Industry
  • Performance
  • Music Technology

You will learn about how to choose a balanced repertoire, good practice and rehearsal schedules along with working to a timescale and as a team. You will be a member of one of the several groups that we form every year and will take part in regular performances.

Entry guidelines

Priority will be given to those aged 16-18 years old.

5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (preferably to include English language) Equivalent qualifications or experience in Music will be considered but not essential. Students will be required to demonstrate a keen interest in the subject area. An audition is part of the interview process.

Assessment Method

All coursework is internally assessed regularly and externally verified annually. There is no exam. All students aged 16-19 have to study GCSE English or Maths if they have not already achieved a grade C.

Additional Information

The course is delivered in a pathway system and students' progress through two programmes beginning with the diploma and ending with the extended diploma. This may include further assistance from the Advice and Guidance team based in the college.

Student development is continually assessed through classwork, tutorials and assignments. This development centres on the intellectual and musical, along with the personal, as identified by UAL requirements.


Are you aged 16-18?
Study programmes are full-time courses for 16-18 year olds which include:

  • A qualification such as BTEC Extended Diploma
  • Meaningful work experience or preparation for work
  • English and maths, if you don't already have GCSE grade A* - C in English and maths
  • Non-study activities such as tutorials, voluntary work, fund-raising/charity work, sport or trips

    If you are aged 16-18:

    This study programme will be FREE for most students who are aged 16-18 on 31 August, or students aged 19-24 with an Education, Health & Care Plan.

    If you are aged 19 or over:

    Fee : £6300.00

    Depending on your personal circumstances, this course could be FREE for you if you are aged 19-23 and you do not already have a level 3 qualification. Please see our Fees and Discounts leaflet for details, or call 0151 551 7777.

    If you are aged 19+, you may be able to apply for a 19+ Advanced Learner Loan (which is available for this course).

    The fee quoted is for the academic year 2017-18. Course fees for 2018-19 will be confirmed in due course.
