Access to Higher Education courses are designed to prepare you for higher education (HE). They address the particular needs of adults, 19 and over, who do not have the level of qualification necessary to apply to study at degree level.


In addition to lesson time, you will be expected to complete at least 16 hours of independent study per week.

Course details

The course is designed for those students wishing to pursue a career within Art and Design. The art and design pathway is structured to provide you with the opportunity to produce a portfolio of your own work that will enable you to progress onto higher level courses.

The course is made up of units of learning and examples include the following: Drawing for Art and Design Figure Studies Graphic Skills Development Fine Arts Skills Development Relief Printmaking

All of these units will include the analysis, evaluation and recording of information. Throughout your course you will be supported in your studies by staff with practical and commercial skills in these areas and teaching will be flexible to enable you to achieve your goals.

Credits are awarded for the Access course modules and in total 60 credits are gained, 45 of which are graded.

  • Entry guidelines

    Relevant Level 2 qualification at Pass or above or minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade A*- C.
    Satisfactory interview, assessment, school report and/or satisfactory reference.
    Portfolio of work to include drawings, paintings or design ideas.
    Satisfactory interview to assess motivation, previous experience if applicable, communication skills, career planning, organising skills and creative potential.

    Please note that funding is not generally available for second degree courses; it is important that you check your individual eligibility for the degree course/s you intend to apply for.

    Progression may be available to a wide range of degree courses including Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration and most other design based programmes.
