Wirral Met College welcomed James Whittaker, Group Development Director, to officially launch its Wirral Waters Campus on Friday 24th June 2016, supported by five students representing different specialisms in Construction and the Built Environment.

Over 70 key employers and partners joined the students to dedicate the first new building to be built in Wirral Waters to education and skills. The Mayor of Wirral also planted a tree in the grounds to symbolise the Borough’s pride and support of a College that has served its community for 165 years.

Wirral Met’s newest £11m college campus was developed by Peel and supported with capital funding from the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) and the Housing & Communities Agency (HCA).

Sue Higginson, Principal of Wirral Met College, said, “This has to be the best facility in the UK for developing skills in Construction and the Built Environment.  The building was designed to be a teaching resource that allows students to see, first hand, how a building is constructed from concept design to completion.  It is also fantastic that the design of the building won a prestigious national award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), recognising the design skills of our architects, Glenn Howells and particularly Fraser Godfrey, the young architect who used this Wirral Waters project to complete his professional architecture qualifications.

Over 500 students study at the campus and what makes the campus particularly special is the fact that over 300 of our students were actively involved in the construction. Again, this was thanks to the way in which Morgan Sindall embraced the opportunity to turn the experience into one that students could benefit from.”

James Whittaker, Group Development Director, said, “This project demonstrates true collaboration between Peel, the public sector and Wirral Met College – a truly exemplary partnership that shows how regeneration happens.  We will continue to work in close partnership with the College to ensure that the students benefit from Wirral Waters – not only in construction but in other areas of their curriculum.”
