Working in our fully licensed training restaurant, The Birches, you will develop a range of skills and experience to prepare you for work in this exciting profession. You will take part in a number of themed events and competitions, work regularly in our restaurant and develop your work experience.

Where next?

Students completing level 1 and 2 study programmes progress to the level 3 programme, or progress into jobs or apprenticeships within the hospitality and catering industry.

Career opportunities

These courses equip students with the skills and knowledge to progress onto occupations including:

Trainee chefs (Commis Chefs) earn from around £13,000 per year, but Head Chefs in top hotels and restaurants may earn around £30,000 per year. Waiting staff can earn around £12,000 to £16,000 per year and bar people can earn from between £11,000 and £17,000 depending on their experience; if you take on additional responsibilities and are managing staff, you may earn around £20,000. Where are they now?

Sam Creedon

Sam studied NVQ level 2 Hospitality and Catering and NVQ level 3 Professional Cookery at Wirral Met College and then progressed to working as a chef at Portrait House, Hoylake. Sam also won the “Wirral Young Chef of the Year 2014” competition.
